Maintaining a motorcycle is like maintaining a wife and a son/daughter for me. Regular pre-ride checks, monthly checks, and then yearly maintenance, including tune-ups is a must. It is an easy routine but for most people it can be a troublesome, a waste of time. Taking good care of your motorcycle is the key for your motorcycle to serve you for years.
STEPS ON MAINTAINING YOUR MOTORCYCLE:
- Always Check your tire treads at least once a week. Look for cuts and scrapes on your tires, which could cause a blowout. Add air pressure as needed. Many blowouts are the result of low air pressure. Investigate both of your wheels for loose or missing spokes. Check the rims for dents or cracks. Lift the wheel off the ground. Spin it and watch the motion. Listen for noise and move it to check for looseness. This will also prevent you from accident.
- Inspect the controls for smooth operation, and watch for kinks or broken strands in your cables. Always apply lubricant on the mechanisms at either end of the cables. Regularly check the sprockets for worn teeth and oil the chain.
- And always inspect for missing or loose bolts, nuts or cotter pins. Keep your bike clean so it's easier to spot missing parts.
- Always adjust your brakes so when they are applied fully because this will prevent you from an accident.
- Always change your engine oil or gear oil frequently as it lubricates your gears and engines, and also keeps your engine cool. Not changing the engine oil will cause further damage to the engine Which can't be noticed early. Change every once a month if you do not use it frequently. Or just refer to your motorcycle manual.
- Spark plugs, it is the item that ignites the engine to start. This should be changed once a year or just refer to your manual. Refer also to your manual about the best suited brand for your motorcycle's spark plugs.
